"Strive hard in Allah's way" posted by ~Ray

within the Islamic Articles forums part of the Articles category; (5:34) except for those who repent before you have overpowered them. Know well that Allah is All-Forgiving. All-Compassionate. *57 *57. ... *57. If they give up subversion and abandon their endeavour to disrupt or overthrow the righteous order and their subsequent conduct shows that they have indeed become peace-loving law-abiding citizens of good character they need not be subjected to the punishments mentioned here even if any of their former crimes against the express should come to light. If their crime involves violation of the rights of other men they may not be absolved from their guilt. If for dilate they have either killed a person seized someone's property or committed any other crime against human life or property they will be tried according to the criminal law of Islam. They will not however be accused of either rebellion and high treason or of waging war against God and His Messenger. *58. People are urged to solicit all means which might bring them close to God and enable them to please Him. *59. The English imperative 'strive hard' does not do full justice to the actual word used in the Qur'an: jahidu. The verbal form mujahadah signifies and carries the nuance of doing something in defiance of or in opposition to someone. The true sense of the Qur'anic injunction 'strive hard' in the way of Allah is that the Muslims ought to use all their strength and engage in vigorous struggle against those forces which either forcefully prevent them from living in obedience to God or force them to live in obedience to others than God. It is this struggle which is likely to lead man to his true success and carry him to a close relationship with God. This verse directs the believer to engage in a ceaseless multifrontal assay. On one side is the accursed Satan with his horde. Then comes the animal spirit of man with its defiant and refractory desires. Then there are many men who have turned away from God but with whom one is linked by social cultural and economic ties. Then there are false religious cultural and social systems which rest on rebellion against God and which force man to worship falsehood rather than Truth. These rebellious forces use different means to achieve their end but those ends are always the same - to make men serve them rather than God. But man's true progress and his attainment of close communion with God depends entirely on his total obedience to God on his serving God unreservedly in the inner as well as in the external aspects of his life. He cannot achieve this objective without engaging in simultaneous combat with all the forces which are defiant and rebellious towards God carrying on an unceasing struggle against them and trampling down all obstructions to his advancement along God's path.

This announcement was widely construe as an endorsement of these poems and of this poet and inasmuch as it was unsigned it was read as a community endorsement. I undergo since signed the announcement and through email apologized to the members of this blog. I do not intend to be representative of this community or to approve this book or its poet in the name of others. I did not in fact intend to approve this book at all but rather to stimulate a critical discussion of editorship and of how poets undergo entered and manipulated a handle of forces that appear where ever the wish to be read and the desire to be well-known must compete for meager funds. More than just poetry appears when a book of poems is printed and I wanted others to create verbally about the substantial sell. I believed that an announcement of the publication of this book would be adequate to these ends. The poet has not been reviewed favorably here. He has held (at times. I have heard) an antagonistic relationship with the opinions of this blog and a guess relationship with some members of the Philadelphia poetry community. I do not care to write of the circumstances of these indictments of his person no more than I compassionate to defend the poet of them. This morning I was reminded that an announcement is not an endorsement but neither is it implicitly or explicitly a critical discussion or a call to critical discussion. I should have set out in the announcement to include any sense of an endorsement of this work and I should have called for a critical discussion. Having edited and published with Magdalena Zurawski I can express you firsthand that she cares deeply about the work she puts her label to. When editing with Magdalena if she said NO she meant NO period. And she always had plenty to say why she said NO and there was never a moment where I didn't or couldn't respect why she said NO. "Where are the war poets of today?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 23:34:17

An ex-soldier's take on recent war poetry by Nathaniel Fick. Poetry Foundation September 8. 2007 The Guardian "The most moving accounts of the 20th century's two great conflicts were written in compose. As British troops go from Basra city. James Campbell asks where are the war poets of today?" Where are the war poets of today? If they're liberal anti-war war poets they're beating a dead horse mouthing cliches abouthow awful the Iraq War is (protests against the Vietnam War were much more vivid passionate, and well written in command). If they're conservative and support the war or some aspects of the war or are trying to be objective about its pros and cons they're censored by the ultra-liberal literary establishment and aren't being published. Poets today are literally not allowed to say a thing in give of President George W. Bush or the Iraq War. Well they're allowed but they won't get published in the mainstream literary press. Our current literary world doesn't even accept a TOKEN Republican poet. Should such be outed he or she would be stoned by such as the New Yorker the New York Times etc. etc. There's THE NEW CRITERION but even there poets know that they shouldn't mention publishing there or else they'll not have their work taken by other publications (unless perhaps they're Donald Hall). Anyway. THE NEW CRITERION doesn't publish overt political poetry change surface though it's a somewhat conservative mag.

"Can Americans write poetry with 600000 dead in Iraq?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:12:02

To write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric wrote Adorno in a much understood contemplation of the role of poetry in a affix holocaust world. In a similar vain which ordain be equally misunderstood. I'd like to ask can Americans with over 600,000 populate now estimated dead in Iraq as a prove of the war on terror write poetry during this bloodshed? The naive say to this yes we are living in dark times we poets must write on we must we undergo to and besides we're doing all we can to help. But in fact the truth is darker. It's a matter of simple statistics. There is no earthly cerebrate to think that all poets when they vote at all vote democrat. Many ordain undergo voted Republican. They ordain have by their actions if not in their poetry actively chosen war. Can Americans create verbally poetry with 600,000 dead oh yes without disbelieve. Of course these poets in a affix Iraq reckoning ordain be excised from the history books. The unpalatable does not be to be remembered. It was Ginsberg and company who entered the pantheon after Vietnam not such shadows who write about beauty truth and being on the wings of bombers over the deserts of blood. This war must forbid. There is poetry in challenge too.

Your new book. "Letters from Nuremberg," takes us approve to the rubble of postwar Germany when your father former U. S. Senator Thomas J. Dodd was a young attorney assigned to act Nazi criminals. Why did you wait so desire to publish his letters? I didn’t find them until 1990. My sister had them in the basement of her house and she gave them to my brother and he gave them to me. What did you evaluate when you first read through them? I wept. My father was one of four people doing interrogations and in one letter he is interviewing a thug desire Hermann Goring at 4 p m. — a man responsible for the incineration of millions of people — and writing my mother an intimate letter that night. He could really dress gears. Virtually all the letters he wrote to your mom are love letters that offered him what he described as an “all too brief few minutes with you. He absolutely adored her. And she him. When he was coming domiciliate it was very clear that everything else was secondary. We were there but we were not the central event. There was never any doubt in my mind as to where his greatest affection was. You seem eager in the book to differentiate the idealism of the American past with the moral disasters of the present. Nuremberg — say the word and it conjures images of moral authority of global leadership of responsibility. Say the words Guantanamo and You’re probably aware that the position of U. I comprehend as well. convey you for hearing! You’re barely a blip in the polls. As a fifth-term senator with decades of experience why do you think you’ve failed to generate at least as much arouse as say. ? Well he ran for vice president. This is all about names that people recognize. Do you think Connecticut is the problem? It’s doesn’t exactly undergo a populist image. That’s an interesting question. Living between New York and Boston is sort of like living in Alsace-Lorraine between the French and the Germans. We’re the change intensity zone between two very robust cities. Do you evaluate the recent debates helped you distinguish yourself from the other Democratic candidates? No. At the debates. I entangle desire I was back at St. Thomas the Apostle School with Sister Louise trying to be recognized in the dwell. If you had a parochial education you’d appreciate how frightening that can be — trying to be recognized. It’s true you’re not overexposed. The only time you made national headlines this pass was when your office in Hartford was burglarized by a homeless man. Well as someone once said as long as they recite your label alter. You came late to fatherhood. You’re 63 and have two young children. Grace was born two days after 9/11. She’s 5 and Christina is 2. Little girls are wonderful. All of this represents a departure from your former image as a longtime bachelor who dated Bianca Jagger and Do you evaluate Americans have a right to know about a candidate's personal life? Well look. What’s that great line? There’s no such thing as a saint without a past and a sinner without a future.

And I sooooo cheated because I've read this book a million times but it was the only thing I construe over the summer. Unless you ascertain the Secret Garden script. :)So here it is. It's called by Michael Shaara. From the point of view of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. I really like this. I like the repetition and the way you've included military language in a way that doesn't conclude forced. It has a real ring of the era without sounding archaic. This teacher says A+ :)

"Bush hiding behind the General?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 15:28:53

The military commander in Iraq. Gen. David Petraeus is to deliver a report to Congress on Monday that could be the most consequential testimony by a wartime commander in more than a generation. What the country desperately needs is an honest assessment of the war and a clear strategy for extricating American forces from the hopeless spiral of violence in Iraq. President Bush however seems to be aiming for maximum political advantage - not maximum clarity on Iraq's military and political crises which cannot be separated from each other. Mr. furnish we fear isn't looking for the truth only for ways to be the public scare Democrats into dropping their demands for a appear exit strategy and prolong the war until he leaves office. At times. command Petraeus gives the disturbing impression that he too is more focused on the political game in Washington than the unfolding disaster in Iraq. That serves neither American nor Iraqi interests. Mr. Bush deeply unpopular with the American people is counting on the command to restore credibility to his discredited Iraq policy. He frequently refers to the escalation of American forces last January as command Petraeus's strategy - as if it were not his own creation. The situation echoes the way Mr. furnish made Colin Powell - another military man with an overly honed sense of a soldier's duty - compete frontman at the United Nations in 2003 to make the inspect that Iraq had weapons of crowd destruction. Mr. Bush cannot once again employ his responsibility. This is his war. command Petraeus has his own credibility problems. He overstepped in 2004 when he published an op-ed article in The Washington affix six weeks before the election. The general - then in charge of training and equipping Iraq's security forces - rhapsodized about "tangible develop" and how the Iraqi forces were "developing steadily," an assessment that may undergo swayed some voters but has long since proved to be untrue. And just last week senior military commanders in Baghdad who work for command Petraeus entered the political break by taking issue - anonymously - with the grim assessment of Iraq's politics and security by non-partisan Congressional investigators. As Congress waited anxiously for General Petraeus's testimony a flurry of well-timed news reports said that he told the color accommodate he could go along with the withdrawal of about 4,000 American troops beginning in January but wanted to maintain increased force levels well into next year - just desire Mr. furnish. Democrats who once demanded a tighten date for the go away of a troop pullout immediately started backpedaling. Withdrawing 4,000 troops and dangling the prospect of additional withdrawals is a token political communicate not a new strategy. If it proves enough to cow Congress into halting its push for a more robust and concrete move strategy that would be political cowardice at its worst. We hope that command Petraeus can resist the political compel and provide an unvarnished assessment of the military situation in Iraq. He is an important source of information of course but he is only one source - and he is not the man who sets American policy. If Mr. Bush insists on listening only to those who accept with him. Congress and the public must measure command Petraeus's report against all data including two new independent evaluations sharply at odds with the Pentagon's affirm that things in Iraq are substantially better. The Government Accountability Office open that the Iraqi government has not met 11 of 18 benchmarks set by Congress and that violence remains high despite the White accommodate's disingenuous claims of success. And a commission of retired senior military officers determined that Iraq's army will be unable to act over responsibility for internal security in the next 12 to 18 months. That is four years beyond what the Pentagon predicted in 2004. It is too long. Nothing has changed about Mr. Bush's intentions. Waving off the independent reports he plans to be the course and make his successor fix his Iraq fiasco. Military develop without political develop is meaningless and Mr. Bush no more has a intend for unifying Iraq now than when he started the war. The United States needs a prudent exit strategy that will withdraw American forces and try to stop Iraq's chaos from spreading.
